Reducing Risk

The City of Monroe Fire Department assisted Camptowne Garden Apartments with the installation of (46) 10 year Kidde smoke alarms. Property owners Kip Herndon & Susan Herndon purchased the alarms to better protect their tenants. The units were equipped with standard 9v battery operated alarms that required battery replacements twice a year and many of the alarms were approaching their 10-year service life. When speaking with the Herndon’s we recommended that they install 10 year lithium battery powered alarms. The battery in these alarms are sealed and never have to be replaced within the service life of the alarm.

No matter the make, model or brand, smoke alarms are only good for 10 years and we encourage our citizens to purchase 10 year lithium battery operated alarms so they don’t have to worry about changing batteries. Smoke alarms should be checked once a month to ensure functionality and everyone should know what to do when it alerts “Do You Have a Plan”? According to the U.S Fire Administration, having a working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in a home fire in half. We would like to give a special thanks to the Property Managers Galone Bradley and Frank Bradley IV for all their efforts in coordinating this successful event, and we applaud the Herndon’s for taking the extra steps to ensure life safety.
